Agency

The certifying body that administers the certification program and certifies that individuals meet the necessary requirements including education, experience, training and completion of exam(s) as required to earn the certification being offered.

ANAB (ANSI)

Service

The U.S. Military consists of five different branches or Services: Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. Generally, each of these branches consists of both Active Duty Service members and Reserve units which consist of the Reserves and/or the National Guard.

MOC Code

Military Occupational Codes (MOC) are alphanumeric codes assigned to each military occupational specialty. The distinct codes identify a specific job, with related duties and responsibilities acquired by Service members through training and experience while on active duty or in the Reserves. Each Service has a different coding system for Officer, Warrant Officer and Enlisted personnel categories. Listed below are the codes used in each Service by personnel category:

MOC Title

Military Occupational Code (MOC) Title is the occupational title that goes with the MOC.

Personnel Category

The U.S. military divides its employees into three categories: Enlisted, Warrant Officers and Officers.

• Enlisted: Enlisted Service members are those who serve in an occupational specialty that requires a high school diploma (or GED) as a minimum educational requirement. Their responsibilities range from entry-level to enlisted supervisory, advisory and managerial roles.
• Warrant Officer (WO): Warrant officers are non-commissioned officers who work in all branches of the military except the Air Force. They serve as technical experts, possessing a high degree of specialization in a field, and provide guidance and instruction in that field.
• Officer: The personnel category Officer refers to commissioned officers serving in the Armed Forces. Officers typically perform in leadership and management roles, or in highly specialized fields requiring higher education. While there may be several pathways to become an officer, in most cases officers are required to have a four-year college degree.

The COOL link is a direct link to the specific MOC page from the COOL website for the associated Service or civil service. COOL provides Service members and civil service personnel with information on certifications and licenses, apprenticeships and civilian occupations related to their jobs.

O*NET Title

O*NET Titles are civilian occupational job titles from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (O*NET).

Career Cluster

DOL Career Clusters are a part of the Department of Labor’s O*NET classification system. Career Clusters contain occupations in the same field of work that require similar skills. They are used to help focus education plans towards obtaining the necessary knowledge, competencies, and training for success in a particular career pathway.

DOL Job Families

DOL Job Families are a part of the Department of Labor’s O*NET classification system. O*NET Occupations are categorized in a hierarchy that starts with the Job Family (or Major Group). Job Families are groups of similar occupations based on work performed and on required skills, education, training, and credentials. There are currently 22 O*NET Job Families on COOL with titles such as Architecture and Engineering, Construction, Protective Service, or Transportation and Material Moving.
